PLAZA DE ARMAS

The monastery Santa Catalina is one of the most important religious monuments of Peru’s colonial times. Fully intact and still in use, it is a sight you should absolutely visit. The monastery was built in 1579. Back then it resembled a small city with its fortified walls around an area of about 20,000 square meters (5 acres) and colorful alleyways full of life, small living quarters, common rooms etc. In the 17th century, it was expanded. Today, the original old buildings with their fully intact furnishing are living proof of the religious culture of past centuries. Beata Sor de los Ángeles Monteagudo was one of the last sisters to honor the old traditions of monastery life. She was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1985..
